SCONUL Seven Pillars of Information Literacy Core Model for Higher Education

UNAM library has modified SCONUL Information and digital literacy pillars to make them clear and easier for first-year students to understand. 

IDL MODIFIED SCONUL PILLARS WHICH ARE ALSO PROGRAM UNITS AS FOLLOW:

  • SCOPE IS COMBINED WITH PLAN - INFORMATION SEARCHING STATEGIES
  • GATHER - LOCATE AND ACCESS INFORMATION
  • EVALUATION 
  • MANAGE - USE INFORMATION ETHICALLY
  • PRESENT - PRESENTATION OF INFORMATION

IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION AND DIGITAL LITERACY TRAINING

  • Information and Digital Literacy is part of the university graduates' academic attributes.
  • Being information and digital literate will enable students and researchers to find, evaluate, organise and use information professionally and ethically anytime and everywhere. 
  • It is an essential skill for all students and staff to support their academic studies and professional development. 
  •  IDL skills training equip students and researchers with the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, and participating ethically in communities of learning. 
  • IDL encompasses concepts such as digital, visual, and media literacy, academic literacy, information handling, information skills, data curation, and data management.

UNAM INFORMATION AND DIGITAL LITERACY SKILLS TRAINING OBJECTIVES

UNAM  Library adopted the SCONUL Seven Pillars of Information and Digital Literacy Model for Higher Education. The model is used as  framework to teach students and researchers on the process of acquiring information and digital literacy skills required for academic learning, teaching, studying, and research to become independent lifelong researchers.
