Citation and Referencing: Changes from 6 to 7 Edition

This guide shows you how to cite using different referencing styles

Note to students

The American Psychological Association has recently published the APA 7th referencing style which is significantly different to APA 6th

Kindly review all the information on the APA 7th Guide. You will find some reference formats have moved categories and there have been small alterations to most format examples. Some of the notable changes include:

In-text referencing

  • When using a narrative direct quotation the page number now moved to brackets at the end of the quote.
  • Author names listed in in-text references: For 3 or more authors cite only the surname of the first author followed by et al. 

Reference list

  • No longer needed place of publication.
  • List all authors up to and including 20 authors.
  • No longer include the words ‘Retrieved from’ for online resources.
  • DOI format has changed. The format is now: https://doi.org/10.xx

General APA 7th information

  • Material to be referenced is generally classified by the format rather than retrieval location.This has led to changes where examples are located on the Guide.
  • Clarity is given regarding citing social media platforms, grey literature and web resources.

What you need to do

  • Researchers can download Mendeley referencing software.
  • For Research Students please talk with your Supervisor and decide whether to remain with APA 6th or move to APA 7th.
  • Support from the Americaln Psychological Association will be limited going forward for APA 6th. Refer to Archiving the Sixth Edition APA Style Blog.
